The Secret Place: What It Is and Where to Find It

Most believers know the famous promise in Psalm 91. It’s quoted in times of danger, recited as a declaration of protection, and even posted on bumper stickers. But few understand the condition attached to this powerful promise. The protection offered is not automatic. It is reserved for those who actively dwell, or remain, in what Scripture calls “the Secret Place.”

The question is: What is this Secret Place? And where is it?

Let’s take a fresh look, through Hebrew eyes, at what Psalm 91 really teaches.

The Secret Place Is Not a Psalm

Many assume the Psalm itself is the Secret Place. They treat it like a spiritual shield, reciting it, printing it on keychains, or claiming it without understanding. But Psalm 91 isn’t a magic wand. The promise of protection isn’t in the text itself, but in the act of abiding in the Place it describes.

To dwell in the Secret Place, you must first know what it is and where to find it.

The Hebrew Word Behind “Secret Place”

In Hebrew, the phrase “Secret Place” is סִתְרָה – sitrah. This word contains four Hebrew letters, each full of meaning:

Samek (ס) – Support, life-sustaining strength, like an umbilical cord to the Vine.

Taw (ת) – Covenant mark; a sign of being joined to YaHuWaH’s eternal promises.

Resh (ר) – Head or ruler; symbolic of His sovereign authority.

Hei (ה) – Revelation; the insight given by the Spirit to know Him.

Together, these paint a picture of a covenant Place of safety, governed by His Word, revealed to the obedient, and sustained by His Name.

So, What Is the Secret Place?

The answer is stunning in its simplicity:
The Name of YaHuWaH.

His Name is not just a label, it is the Place of protection. It represents His identity, presence, authority, and covenant. Faith in Psalm 91 alone won’t protect anyone unless it leads us to know and dwell in His Name.

Where Is the Secret Place?

The answer may surprise you. It’s not far away or difficult to reach.

It is as near as your heart and your mouth.

Speaking His Name in love, reverence, and obedience is how we enter the Secret Place. It becomes a reality through our mouth, by declaring and honoring the covenant Name YaHuWaH.

The greatest treasure your heart can carry, and your mouth can speak, is His Name.

Religious Tradition vs. Scriptural Truth

Religious tradition, especially Rabbinic Judaism, has forbidden the uttering of the Name, teaching it is “ineffable.” Many Hebrew Roots believers have absorbed this error. But this is in direct contradiction to the Torah.

This blessing is not just for Levitical priests. Under Yahusha, who restored the Melchizedek priesthood, we are made:

Even a child can speak His Name and bless others. Don’t let fear or tradition rob you of this beautiful calling.

The Reward of Those Who Know His Name

The final verses of Psalm 91 make the condition clear:

To love Him is to obey Him.

Entering the Secret Place

The Secret Place of the Most High is not a poetic mystery or a symbolic hiding spot. It is literal and powerful: His Name, YaHuWaH.

To dwell there, you must walk in loving obedience to His covenant and call upon His true Name, daily, reverently, boldly.
