The Oil of Joy
Out of the wilderness of refining, YaHuWaH begins to pour out the shemen sason, the oil of joy. It is the anointing that marks the transition from mourning to rejoicing, from captivity to restoration. The oil of joy is not emotional relief but spiritual renewal, the gladness that flows from reconciliation with the Father and alignment with His covenant.
Yeshayahu prophesied of Yahusha, saying, “The Spirit of the Master YaHuWaH is upon Me, because YaHuWaH has anointed Me to bring good news to the meek. He has sent Me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim release to the captives… to appoint unto those who mourn in Tsiyon, to give them embellishment for ashes, the oil of joy (shemen sason) for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness” (Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 61:1-3).
The Hebrew word shemen (שֶׁמֶן) means “oil, fatness, richness.” According to Brown-Driver-Briggs, it speaks of abundance and anointing, that which consecrates, heals, and sets apart. The word sason (שָׂשׂוֹן) means “rejoicing, delight, exultation.” Combined, shemen sason portrays joy that flows from abundance, gladness born of covenant renewal.
Ephrayim’s journey through the wilderness strips away the false comforts of the nations, preparing him to receive the true comfort of YaHuWaH’s presence. The oil of joy comes only after the crushing of the olive. Without the pressing, there is no anointing; without surrender, there is no gladness. YaHuWaH uses brokenness to release the fragrance of joy that cannot be produced by ease.
David understood this when he wrote, “You have turned my mourning into dancing for me; You have loosed my sackcloth and girded me with gladness” (Tehillim (Psalms) 30:11). This transformation is not outward alone; it flows from the restoration of the inner man. Joy, in Hebraic thought, is not a fleeting emotion but a state of strength. “For the joy of יהוה is your strength” (Neḥemyah (Nehemiah) 8:10).
The oil of joy is the mark of those who have returned in teshuvah and have been restored in spirit. It is not the laughter of denial but the joy of deliverance, the deep contentment of knowing that the favor of YaHuWaH rests upon them once more. When Ephrayim receives this oil, the ashes of sorrow become fuel for praise.
Yahusha carried this same anointing: “You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore Elohim, Your Elohim, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more than Your companions” (Tehillim (Psalms) 45:7, Ibrim (Hebrews) 1:9). Those who walk in His ways share in that anointing, not the fleeting joy of this world, but the eternal gladness of restored fellowship with YaHuWaH.
Selah:
Have you allowed YaHuWaH to exchange your ashes for His oil of joy? Are there areas of lingering heaviness or sorrow that He desires to transform into praise? Ask Him to pour His anointing upon you afresh, to fill you with the strength of His gladness, and to clothe you in the garment of praise. The oil of joy marks your renewal. You are Ephrayim rising.
