When Yahusha said He was sent “only to the lost sheep of the house of Yisra’El” (“I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Yisra’El.” – Mattithyahu (Matthew) 15:24), He wasn’t talking about a future institution called the Christian church. He was speaking about a specific people, descendants of the twelve tribes of Yisra’El, particularly the northern kingdom that had been scattered and absorbed into the nations centuries earlier.
Historical Foundation: Who is the House of Yisrael
After King Solomon’s reign, the nation of Yisra’El split into two kingdoms: the southern kingdom of Yahudah, which included the tribes of Yahudah, Binyamin, and some Lewi, and the northern kingdom of Yisra’El (10 tribes), often called Ephrayim or Yoseph. The northern tribes turned away from the Torah and were eventually exiled by the Assyrians. These exiled Yisrealites became “lost” not only geographically but also spiritually and culturally, mixing with the nations and forgetting their identity.
Division of the kingdom – “and said to Yaroḇ‛am, “Take for yourself ten pieces, for thus said YaHuWaH, the Elohim of Yisra’El, ‘See, I am tearing the reign out of the hand of Shelomoh and shall give ten tribes to you, but he shall have one tribe for the sake of My servant Dawiḏ, and for the sake of Yerushalayim, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Yisra’El. Because they have forsaken Me, and bow themselves to Ashtoreth the mighty one of the Tsiḏonians, to Kemosh the mighty one of the Moaḇites, and to Milkom the mighty one of the children of Ammon, and have not walked in My ways – to do what is right in My eyes, and My laws and My right-rulings, as did his father Dawiḏ. But I do not take all the reign out of his hand, because I have made him ruler all the days of his life for the sake of My servant Dawiḏ, whom I chose because he guarded My commands and My laws. And I shall take the reign out of his son’s hand and give it to you, the ten tribes.” Melaḵim Aleph (1 Kings) 11:31-35
Assyrian exile and dispersion of the northern tribes – “In the ninth year of Hoshĕa, the sovereign of Ashshur captured Shomeron and exiled Yisra’El to Ashshur, and settled them in Ḥalaḥ and Ḥaḇor, the River of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes. Now this came to be because the children of Yisra’El had sinned against YaHuWaH, their Elohim, who had brought them up out of the land of Mitsrayim, from under the hand of Pharaoh, sovereign of Mitsrayim, and feared other mighty ones, and walked in the laws of the nations whom YaHuWaH had dispossessed from before the children of Yisra’El, and of the sovereigns of Yisra’El that they had made. And the children of Yisra’El secretly did against YaHuWaH their Elohim matters that were not right, and they built for themselves high places in all their cities, from watchtower unto the walled city, and set up for themselves pillars and Ashĕrim on every high hill and under every green tree, and burned incense there on all the high places, like the nations whom YaHuWaH had removed from their presence. And they did evil matters to provoke YaHuWaH, and served the idols, of which YaHuWaH had said to them, “Do not do this.” And YaHuWaH warned Yisra’El and Yahuḏah, through all of His prophets, and every seer, saying, “Turn back from your evil ways, and guard My commands and My laws, according to all the Torah which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by My servants the prophets.” But they did not listen and hardened their necks, like the necks of their fathers, who did not put their trust in YaHuWaH their Elohim, and rejected His laws and His covenant that He had made with their fathers, and His witnesses which He had witnessed against them, and went after worthlessness, and became worthless, and after the nations who were all around them, of whom YaHuWaH had commanded them not to do like them. And they left all the commands of YaHuWaH their Elohim, and made for themselves a moulded image, two calves, and made an Ashĕrah and bowed themselves to all the host of the heavens, and served Ba‛al, and caused their sons and daughters to pass through the fire, and practised divination and sorcery, and sold themselves to do evil in the eyes of YaHuWaH, to provoke Him. So YaHuWaH was very enraged with Yisra’El, and removed them from His presence – none was left but the tribe of Yahuḏah alone. Yahuḏah also did not guard the commands of YaHuWaH, their Elohim, but walked in the laws of Yisra’El which they made. And YaHuWaH rejected all the seed of Yisra’El, and afflicted them, and gave them into the hand of plunderers, until He had cast them out from His presence. For He tore Yisra’El from the house of Dawiḏ, and they made Yaroḇ‛am son of Neḇat sovereign. And Yaroḇ‛am drove Yisra’El from following YaHuWaH, and made them commit a great sin. And the children of Yisra’El walked in all the sins of Yaroḇ‛am which he did. They did not turn away from them, until YaHuWaH removed Yisra’El from His presence, as He spoke by all His servants the prophets. So Yisra’El was exiled from their land to Ashshur, as it is to this day.” Melaḵim Bĕt (2 Kings) 17:6-23
What happened to the Northern Tribes? – They were exiled, scattered among the nations, lost their identity, and became “Lo-Ammi” (not My people) – “then He said, “Call his name Lo-Ammi, for you are not My people, and I am not for you.” Hoshĕa (Hosea) 1:9
Yahusha’s mission was to call these people back, to restore the covenant and bring them back into obedience to YaHuWaH. His words weren’t vague or metaphorical. They were targeted. He wasn’t sent to form a new religion disconnected from the Torah or the covenants of Yisra’El. He came to fulfill what the prophets spoke: the regathering of scattered Yisra’El (see Ezekiel 34, Jeremiah 31, Hosea 1).
“Yahusha sent these twelve out, having commanded them, saying, “Do not go into the way of the nations, and do not enter a city of the Shomeronim, but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Yisra’El.” Mattithyahu (Matthew) 10:5-6
“And He answering, said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Yisra’El.” Mattithyahu (Matthew) 15:24
“For thus said the Master YaHuWaH, “See, I Myself shall search for My sheep and seek them out. “As a shepherd seeks out his flock on the day he is among his scattered sheep, so I shall seek out My sheep and deliver them from all the places where they were scattered in a day of cloud and thick darkness. “And I shall bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the lands, and shall bring them to their own land. And I shall feed them on the mountains of Yisra’El, in the valleys, and in all the dwellings of the land. “In good pasture I shall feed them, and their fold shall be on the high mountains of Yisra’El. They shall lie there in a good fold and feed in rich pasture on the mountains of Yisra’El. “I shall feed My flock and make them lie down,” declares the Master YaHuWaH. “I shall seek out the lost and bring back the strayed. And I shall bind up the broken and strengthen what was sick, but the fat and the strong I shall destroy. I shall feed them with right-ruling.” Yehezqĕl (Ezekiel) 34:11-16
“My people have been wandering sheep. Their shepherds have led them astray, turning them away on the mountains. They have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their resting place.”
Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 50:6
Prophetic Fulfillment:
“The word of YaHuWaH that came to Hoshĕa son of Be’ĕri, in the days of Uzziyah, Yotham, Aḥaz, and Yeḥizqiyah, sovereigns of Yahuḏah, and in the days of Yaroḇ‛am son of Yo’ash, sovereign of Yisra’El. The beginning of the word of YaHuWaH with Hoshĕa. And YaHuWaH said to Hoshĕa, “Go, take yourself a woman of whoring and children of whoring, for the land has utterly whored away from YaHuWaH.” So he went and took Gomer, daughter of Diḇlayim, and she conceived and bore him a son. And YaHuWaH said to him, “Call his name Yizre‛ĕl, for in a little while I shall revenge the bloodshed of Yizre‛ĕl on the house of Yĕhu, and put an end to the reign of the house of Yisra’El. “And it shall be in that day that I shall break the bow of Yisra’El in the Valley of Yizre‛ĕl.” And she conceived again and bore a daughter. And He said to him, “Call her name Lo-Ruḥamah, for no longer do I have compassion on the house of Yisra’El so as to forgive them at all. “But I shall have compassion on the house of Yahuḏah and save them by YaHuWaH their Elohim, and not save them by bow or by sword or battle, by horses or horsemen.” And she weaned Lo-Ruḥamah, and conceived and bore a son, then He said, “Call his name Lo-Ammi, for you are not My people, and I am not for you. “Yet the number of the children of Yisra’El shall be as the sand of the sea, which is not measured nor counted. And it shall be in the place where it was said to them, ‘You are not My people,’ they shall be called, ‘You are the sons of the living Ěl.’ “And the children of Yahuḏah and the children of Yisra’El shall be gathered together, and appoint for themselves one head, and shall come up out of the earth, for great is the day of Yizreel!” Hoshĕa (Hosea) 1:1-11
“Say to your brothers, ‘O my people,’ and to your sisters, ‘O, compassioned one.’ “Strive with your mother, strive, for she is not My wife, nor am I her Husband! Let her put away her whorings from her face, and her adulteries from between her breasts, lest I strip her naked, and shall set her up as on the day she was born, and shall make her like a wilderness, and shall set her like a dry land, and shall put her to death with thirst. “And I shall not have compassion on her children, for they are the children of whorings. “For their mother has whored, she who conceived them has acted shamelessly. For she said, ‘I go after my lovers, who give me my bread and my water, my wool and my linen, my oil and my drink.’ “Therefore, see, I am hedging up your way with thorns, and I shall wall her in, so that she does not find her paths. “And she shall pursue her lovers but not overtake them, and shall seek them but not find them. Then she shall say, ‘Let me go and return to my first husband, for then it was better for me than now.’ “And she did not acknowledge that I gave her grain, and new wine, and oil, and increased her silver and gold which they prepared for Ba‛al. “Therefore I shall turn back and shall take my grain in its time and My new wine in its appointed time, and I shall take away My wool and My linen covering her nakedness. “And now I shall uncover her shame before the eyes of her lovers, and no one shall deliver her from My hand. “And I shall cause all her rejoicing, her festivals, her New Moons, and her Sabbaths, even all her appointed times, to cease, and lay waste her vines and her fig trees, of which she has said, ‘these are my harlot-fees that my lovers have given me.’ And I shall make them a forest, and the beasts of the field shall eat them. “And I shall punish her for the days of the Ba‛als to which she burned incense and adorned herself with her rings and jewelry, and went after her lovers, and forgot Me,” declares YaHuWaH. “Therefore, see, I am alluring her, and shall lead her into the wilderness, and shall speak to her heart, and give to her vineyards from there, and the Valley of Aḵor as a door of expectation. And there she shall respond as in the days of her youth, as in the day when she came up from the land of Mitsrayim. “And it shall be, in that day,” declares YaHuWaH, “that you call Me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer call Me ‘My Ba‛al.’ “And I shall remove the names of the Ba‛als from her mouth, and they shall no more be remembered by their name. “And in that day I shall make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the birds of the heavens, and with the creeping creatures of the ground, when bow, and sword, and battle I break from the earth. And I shall make them lie down in safety. “And I shall take you as a bride unto Me forever, and take you as a bride unto Me in righteousness, and in right-ruling, and loving-commitment and compassion. “And I shall take you as a bride unto Me in trustworthiness, and you shall know YaHuWaH. “And it shall be in that day that I answer,” declares YaHuWaH, “that I answer the heavens, and they answer the earth, and the earth answer the grain and the new wine and the oil, and they answer Yizre‛ĕl. “And I shall sow her for Myself in the earth, and I shall have compassion on her who had not obtained compassion. And I shall say to those who were not My people, ‘You are My people,’ while they say, ‘My Elohim!’ ” Hoshĕa (Hosea) 2:1-23
“The hand of YaHuWaH was upon me and took me out by the Spirit of YaHuWaH, and set me down in the midst of the valley. And it was filled with bones. And He made me pass among them, all around, and see, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and see, they were very dry. And He said to me, “Son of man, would these bones live?” And I said, “O Master YaHuWaH, You know.” Again He said to me, “Prophesy to these bones, and you shall say to them, ‘O dry bones, hear the word of YaHuWaH! Thus said the Master YaHuWaH to these bones, “See, I am bringing into you a spirit, and you shall live. “And I shall put sinews on you and bring flesh upon you, and cover you with skin and put a spirit in you, and you shall live. And you shall know that I am YaHuWaH.” And I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a noise, and there was a rattling. And the bones came together, bone to bone. And I looked and saw sinews and flesh came upon them, and skin covered them, but there was no spirit in them. He then said to me, “Prophesy to the spirit, prophesy, son of man, and you shall say to the spirit, ‘Thus said the Master YaHuWaH, “Come from the four winds, O spirit, and breathe on these killed ones, so that they live.” And I prophesied as He commanded me, and the spirit came into them, and they lived, and stood upon their feet, a very great army. And He said to me, “Son of man, these bones are all the house of Yisra’El. See, they say, ‘Our bones are dry, our expectancy has perished, and we ourselves have been cut off!’ “Therefore prophesy, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus said the Master YaHuWaH, “See, O My people, I am opening your burial-sites and shall bring you up from your burial-sites, and shall bring you into the land of Yisra’El. “And you shall know that I am YaHuWaH, when I open your burial-sites, My people, and bring you up from your burial-sites. “And I shall put My Spirit in you, and you shall live, and I shall settle you in your own land. And you shall know that I YaHuWaH have spoken, and I have done it,” declares YaHuWaH.’ ” And the word of YaHuWaH came to me, saying, “And you, son of man, take a stick for yourself and write on it, ‘For Yahuḏah and for the children of Yisra’El, his companions.’ Then take another stick and write on it, ‘For Yosĕph, the stick of Ephrayim, and for all the house of Yisra’El, his companions.’ “Then bring them together for yourself into one stick, and they shall become one in your hand. “And when the children of your people speak to you, saying, ‘Won’t you show us what you mean by these?’ say to them, ‘Thus said the Master YaHuWaH, “See, I am taking the stick of Yosĕph, which is in the hand of Ephrayim, and the tribes of Yisra’El, his companions. And I shall give them unto him, with the stick of Yahuḏah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in My hand.” ’ “And the sticks on which you write shall be in your hand before their eyes. “And speak to them, ‘Thus said the Master YaHuWaH, “See, I am taking the children of Yisra’El from among the nations, wherever they have gone, and shall gather them from all around, and I shall bring them into their land. “And I shall make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Yisra’El. And one sovereign shall be sovereign over them all, and let them no longer be two nations, and let them no longer be divided into two reigns. “And they shall no longer defile themselves with their idols, nor with their disgusting matters, nor with any of their transgressions. And I shall save them from all their dwelling places in which they have sinned, and I shall cleanse them. And they shall be My people, and I be their Elohim, while Dawiḏ My servant is sovereign over them. And they shall all have one shepherd and walk in My right-rulings and guard My laws, and shall do them. “And they shall dwell in the land that I have given to Ya‛aqoḇ My servant, where your fathers dwelt. And they shall dwell in it, they and their children and their children’s children, forever, and My servant Dawiḏ be their prince forever. “And I shall make a covenant of peace with them – an everlasting covenant it is with them. And I shall place them and increase them, and shall place My set-apart place in their midst, forever. “And My Dwelling Place shall be over them. And I shall be their Elohim, and they shall be My people. “And the nations shall know that I, YaHuWaH, am setting Yisra’El apart, when My set-apart place is in their midst – forever.” Yehezqĕl (Ezekiel) 37:1-28
The Christian Church – A Separate Historical Development
The Early Church’s Hebraic Roots
The first followers of Yahusha were Torah-observant Yisraelites and Yahudim.
They continued keeping Shabbat, the Feasts of YaHuWaH, and Temple worship (Acts 2:46; 21:20).
The Shift and Separation
Over time, especially post-70 CE and post-Bar Kokhba Revolt (135 CE), Gentile leaders increasingly redefined the faith:
Council of Nicaea (325 CE): Changed Sabbath to Sunday.
Church Fathers like Marcion rejected the “Old Testament” entirely.
Torah was replaced with new church doctrine.
Result: A Greco-Roman religious structure emerged, alien to the identity and covenant of Yisra’El.
As scholars note, by the second and third centuries CE, the Christian church had diverged significantly from its Hebraic roots, becoming a religion of the empire rather than a continuation of the covenant people.

Non-Yisraelites who believe in Yahusha and submit to torah are grafted into Yisra’El, not into a new entity.
Olive tree metaphor: wild branches grafted into the original root – “And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, have been grafted in among them, and came to share the root and fatness of the olive tree, do not boast against the branches. And if you boast, remember: you do not bear the root, but the root bears you! You shall say then, “The branches were broken off that I might be grafted in.” Good! By unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by belief. Do not be arrogant, but fear. For if Elohim did not spare the natural branches, He might not spare you either. See then the kindness and sharpness of Elohim: on those who fell sharpness, but toward you kindness, if you continue in his kindness, otherwise you also shall be cut off. And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, shall be grafted in, for Elohim is able to graft them in again. For if you were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and were grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree, how much more shall these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree?” Romiyim (Romans) 11:17-24
Once strangers to the covenants, now brought near – “Therefore remember that you, once nations in the flesh, who are called ‘the uncircumcision’ by what is called ‘the circumcision’ made in the flesh by hands, that at that time you were without Messiah, excluded from the citizenship of Yisra’El and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no expectation and without Elohim in the world. But now in Messiah Yahusha, you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of the Messiah.” Eph`siyim (Ephesians) 2:11-13
One law for native and stranger alike – “One law is for you of the assembly and for the stranger who sojourns with you – a law forever throughout your generations. As you are, so is the stranger before YaHuWaH. One Torah and one right-ruling is for you and for the stranger who sojourns with you.” Bemiḏbar (Numbers) 15:15-16
Yahusha didn’t come to start a new religion. He came to renew the covenant with Yisra’El and open the door for others to join.
The “new covenant” is made with the house of Yisrael and Yahudah, not with a “church” – “See, the days are coming,” declares YaHuWaH, “when I shall make a renewed covenant with the house of Yisra’El and with the house of Yahuḏah, not like the covenant I made with their fathers in the day when I strengthened their hand to bring them out of the land of Mitsrayim, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them,” declares YaHuWaH. “For this is the covenant I shall make with the house of Yisra’El after those days, declares YaHuWaH: I shall put My Torah in their inward parts, and write it on their hearts. And I shall be their Elohim, and they shall be My people.” Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 31:31-33
The “lost sheep” Yahusha came for are those from the physical lineage of Yisra’El who had been scattered, along with those among the nations who would be grafted in, not into a new church, but into Yisra’El itself (Romans 1). The restoration is about bringing people back into covenant, not into a new religious system.
Understanding who the “lost sheep” are brings clarity to Yahusha’s purpose and mission. It’s not about forming a new religion, it’s about restoring a covenant people. The Christian church, as it stands today, largely follows a different path. But the call remains: return to YaHuWaH, return to the covenant, and take your place in the house of Yisra’El.
So no, the lost sheep of Yisra’El are not the Christian church. They are the people YaHuWaH scattered and is not regathering, into the original olive tree, not a new one.
The phrase “lost sheep of the house of Yisra’El” is not a metaphor for the Christian church. It is a direct, historical, and prophetic reference to the northern tribes of Yisra’El who were scattered and divorced from covenant, and whom Yahusha came to restore. The church, as it developed, took a separate identity and does not represent the people Yahusha referred to. Understanding this distinction restores the integrity of Scripture and redirects the believer’s identity back to covenant with YaHuWaH, through Yahusha, as part of the house of Yisra’El.
