Understanding Ezekiel 33 in Context
Many people today claim Ezekiel 33:1-9 applies to them, believing that anyone who “sees danger” is automatically a watchman. However, Scripture does not support this idea. The role of a watchman is not self-appointed; it is a direct calling from YaHuWaH. Misapplying this passage can lead to false warnings, misplaced spiritual authority, and messages that do not align with YaHuWaH’s truth.
YaHuWaH Chooses the Watchman, Not Man
In Ezekiel 33:7, YaHuWaH tells Ezekiel: “So you, son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Yisrael; and you shall hear a word from My mouth and warn them for Me.”
This shows that:
Ezekiel did not decide to become a watchman; YaHuWaH appointed him.
The watchman must hear directly from YaHuWaH before giving a warning.
The role is specific to Yisrael, not a general calling for everyone.
Many today misuse this passage, claiming the title of “watchman” without truly being sent by YaHuWaH. Just because someone has knowledge, or insight does not mean they have divine authority to warn others on YaHuWaH’s behalf.
The Watchman Must First Bear the Burden
The role of a prophet or seer, like that of a watchman, is, first and foremost, to bear a burden. The Word of the Set-Apart One is heavy, and those who carry it must be well-trained and well-disciplined, like any person or beast of burden that carries a great weight.
All the prophets spoke from this burden, in other words, they had:
Wept over the sin, iniquity, and rebellion of the people.
Felt the weight of YaHuWaH’s judgment before they spoke of it.
Been broken by the reality of the people’s condition.
Before a true watchman or prophet opens his mouth, he must first experience the pain of the message he carries. This prevents arrogance and spiritual bullying. A watchman who does not first weep for the people has not been sent by YaHuWaH, because the goal is not just correction, but healing and restoration.
True warnings from YaHuWaH are not spoken lightly. They come through many tears for those to whom the message is given, and for their children. The words of a true watchman or prophet are not for self-glory but for redemption.
Not Everyone is Called to Be a Watchman
The idea that all believers are watchmen is a misunderstanding of Scripture. While all followers of YaHuWaH are responsible for living righteously and speaking truth when appropriate, the official role of a watchman is a divine appointment.
Other examples show that YaHuWaH chooses certain people for this role:
Isaiah 62:6 – “I have set watchmen on your walls, O Yerushalayim; they shall never hold their peace day or night.” (YaHuWaH sets them in place.)
Jeremiah 6:17 – “I set watchmen over you, saying, Listen to the sound of the trumpet! But they said, ‘We will not listen.”
These passages make it clear that YaHuWaH, not man, appoints watchmen for His purposes. Those whom He does not call cannot assume the role.
The Danger of False Watchmen
Many self-proclaimed watchmen today:
Take Ezekiel 33 out of context to justify their own warnings.
Preach fear, conspiracy, or personal opinions instead of YaHuWaH’s truth.
Mislead people by focusing on external enemies (e.g., an external Satan) instead of calling for inward repentance.
Use their self-proclaimed position for attention, status, or personal gain.
YaHuWaH warned against such people:
Ezekiel 13:6-7 – “They have seen false visions and lying divinations, saying, ‘YaHuWaH declares,’ when YaHuWaH has not sent them…”
Jeremiah 23:21-22 – “I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran. I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.”
False watchmen may sound convincing, but they are not speaking for YaHuWaH.
Misapplying Ezekiel 33 is Dangerous
Claiming Ezekiel 33 when it does not apply to someone can lead to:
False responsibility – People may feel obligated to warn about things that are not their burden to carry.
Spreading fear instead of truth – False watchmen often promote fear-based messages rather than leading people to YaHuWaH’s truth.
Self-exaltation – Some use the title of “watchman” to elevate themselves rather than to serve.
Misleading others – When people listen to those not sent by YaHuWaH, they may be deceived.
A true watchman does not seek attention. He is burdened by the message he carries. If someone is eager to call themselves a watchman but has not first been crushed by the weight of intercession, they are not sent by YaHuWaH.
The True Role of a Watchman
A true watchman:
Receives direct revelation from YaHuWaH. (Not just human observation.)
Speaks only what YaHuWaH commands. (No personal agendas.)
Warns out of obedience, not self-importance.
Calls people to repentance, not just to external dangers.
Weeps over the sins of the people before speaking of them.
Not Everyone Can Claim Ezekiel 33
The passage in Ezekiel 33 is not a universal call for every believer to become a watchman. It was a direct commission to Ezekiel, and the principle applies only to those YaHuWaH has truly appointed. Many today misuse this passage, falsely assuming a position of spiritual authority.
People cannot simply declare themselves watchmen because they see danger. YaHuWaH alone calls His watchmen, and those who are not called should be careful not to claim a role that does not belong to them. The weight of the watchman’s burden is too great for those not appointed to carry it.
