Hebrew Word: אֱמֶת (Emet)
Transliteration: ’emet
Strong’s Concordance Number: H571
Definition (Strong’s H571):

Stability,

Firmness,

Faithfulness,

Reliability,

Truth,

Trustworthiness.

The Hebrew word Emet is commonly translated into English as truth, but its depth in the original language speaks to far more than factual correctness. In the Hebraic mindset, truth refers to that which is established, trustworthy, and unchanging. It points to something that stands the test of time, a foundation that cannot be shaken.

Root Word:

Hebrew Root: אָמַן (Aman)
Strong’s Concordance Number: H539
Definition (Strong’s H539):

To support,

To confirm,

To be faithful,

To uphold,

To establish,

To believe (in the sense of being dependable or faithful).

From this root, we derive both Emet and the familiar word “Aměn,” which expresses agreement, reliability, and stability. When we say “Aměn,” we are declaring, “It is firm,” or “So be it,” in alignment with the Hebraic concept of truth as something securely established.

This concept is beautifully illustrated in Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 22:23:

Truth Is Set in Place by Torah

Tehillim (Psalms) 119:142 further reveals the connection between truth and Torah:

The word Emet is made up of the Hebrew letters Aleph (א), Mem (מ), and Taw (ת), the first, middle, and last letters of the Hebrew Aleph-Bet. This teaches that truth encompasses the entirety of something, from beginning to end. It is whole, complete, and lacking nothing. It also serves as a picture of YaHuWaH’s eternal nature, who is “the First and the Last.”

Living the Truth

To walk in truth is not simply to affirm what is correct, it is to live in faithful alignment with YaHuWaH’s covenant and commands. According to Hebrew thought, truth is something you do, not merely something you believe. Belief that does not result in faithful action is not emet. As Ya’aqob (James) says, “belief without works is dead.”

The Hebraic idea of truth invites us to ask:

Are we supporting the ways of YaHuWaH in our lives?

Are we walking faithfully and firmly in His Torah?

Are we reflecting His unchanging truth to the world?

Emet is more than correct information; it is covenantal faithfulness, unchanging stability, and alignment with the eternal Word of YaHuWaH. Rooted in Aman, to walk in truth means to uphold, support, and live out the teachings of Torah with steadfast reliability. YaHuWaH’s truth is not shaken by opinion or culture. It is fixed like a peg in a firm place, immovable, eternal, and worthy of our trust.
